Day 1: Introduction to Health Economic Evaluation

Overview: Dive into the fundamentals of health economic evaluation. This full-day course covers key concepts for evaluating the costs and outcomes of healthcare interventions and programs, and how this information informs policy decisions.

Highlights:

• Understand what economic evaluation is, why we do it, and how it is used in policy.

• Explore concepts like cost-effectiveness, utilities, quality adjusted life years (QALY), incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs), perspectives, discounting, and opportunity cost.

• Gain real-world insights through case studies and practical exercises.

• Taught by experienced health economists, Associate Professor Bonny Parkinson, Dr Smriti Raichand and Alicia Norman from the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy.

Days 2 & 3: Advanced Health Economic Modelling

Overview: Associate Professor Mike Paulden (University of Alberta) brings his expertise to Macquarie University in this hands-on, two-day course. Learn to construct efficient and transparent health economic models.

• Understand when to do economic modelling.

• Learn how to build models using Excel and statistical programming languages like R, Python, and Julia with practical exercises.

• Explore state transition models, dynamic arrays, extrapolation and sensitivity analysis.
