Six Gates to the Sublime
Event description
Daylong Meditation Retreat with Michael Owens
The Six Gates to the Sublime is a classic Buddhist meditation instruction manual that explains a unique practice of a combined calming-and-insight (śamatha-vipaśyanā) exercise. The retreat will be a combination of guided and silent meditations centered on breath awareness (ānāpānasati) along with contemplative discourse on this ancient meditation technique.
All meditation levels are welcome.
About the Six Gates: Written by the sixth-century Chinese Buddhist meditation master Zhiyi, this classic text outlines six ‘gates’ or methods of increasing focus and concentration using six simple prompts: Counting, Following, Stabilizing, Contemplating, Turning, and Purity. Each prompt is an increasingly more subtle form of breath awareness, yet moving through the prompts sequentially is only one of many practices described in the text. This retreat will rely upon the The Six Dharma Gates to the Sublime translated from the Chinese by Dharmamitra (Kalavinka Press, 2009).
