Description

Atentamente,

ENGLISH:

Dear avid stargazers!

Important reminder: Due to a change in policy, parking is no longer free. We have metered parking on site.

Black holes are some of the most extreme objects in the universe, capable of tearing stars apart, colliding with each other, and shaping the galaxies around them. In this talk, we explore what happens when a star gets too close and is pulled apart by a black hole, where “missing” black holes in the universe might be hiding, and what we learn when two black holes merge and send out ripples in space called gravitational waves. We will also look at how we search for these rare cosmic events in large streams of data using modern computing methods. Finally, we step back to see how black holes don’t just destroy things, but also play a key role in how galaxies grow and evolve over billions of years.

Afterwards, visit the world-renowned Great Refractor Telescope, built in 1847, the largest telescope in the United States for 20 years. Weather permitting, guests will then step onto our rooftop to experience the cosmos firsthand through a combination of modern instruments and our historic 1912 Clark Telescope. In the event of overcast skies, a comprehensive guided tour of the Great Refractor will be offered in place of rooftop observing.

Schedule:

8:15 PM: Talks:

Dr. Rafael Martínez-Galarza & Dr. Michael Calzadilla: “Black Holes: Destroyers and Architects of the Cosmos”

Hosted by Dr. Andrés Alejandro Plazas Malagón

9:15 PM: Telescope observations on the rooftop. Or, if skies are overcast, a tour of our Great Refractor Telescope will be offered. Please note that each tour is limited to a maximum of 40 participants at a time and lasts approximately 20 minutes. A repeat tour will be offered. An extended Q&A session with the speakers will be offered for those who are unable or prefer not to join the first tour.

10:15 PM: End

Some photography will take place, but the photos will focus on the guest speakers and low-lighting rooftop/tour activities. If you have any issues with photography, please reach out.

This event begins in the Phillips Auditorium, which is at the rear of the Center for Astrophysics complex near Madison Street and our large parking lot, 60 Garden Street, Cambridge. Please arrive 10 minutes in advance to ensure you have enough time to park and to get seated.

We look forward to your presence at the event!
