Steinkoler Trio
Event description
It’s rare to see father-and-son musicians play jazz together. When they do, there’s often an almost palpable sense of telepathy on display, as if somehow in the genetic transmission and upbringing, there were some unspoken secrets of the craft that were passed along. If you were in attendance at any of the past Steinkoler Trio shows, you witnessed a memorable night of music, full of inspired and sympathetic playing, lots of bobbing heads and big smiles.
The Steinkoler Trio returns to The Back Room on July 12 for a special album pre-release show in anticipation of the completion of “Said and Done," a new full-length album of all original compositions written by Evan, blending jazz, pop, funk, and singer-songwriter genres. The project will feature several top Bay Area musicians, including Jeremy on drums, Daniel Fabricant (bass), Steve Bissinger (guitar), and Suede Avery (vocals).
Evan Steinkoler is an up-and-coming young pianist, vocalist, and composer with terrific dynamic range, inventive soloing, and a feel for and command of the instrument well beyond his years. He was the winner of the Dick Conte Piano Scholarship Award in 2023, and was singled out for a scholarship to the Stanford Jazz Institute as the top soloist at the 2024 Campana Jazz Festival. He has performed at jazz festivals across Europe including the Umbria, North Sea, and Vienne Jazz Festivals, and at Bay Area premier jazz venues, including Yoshi’s, the Freight & Salvage, Mr. Tipple’s, and more. He is currently enrolled at Northwestern University, where he is pursuing a dual degree in Jazz Piano and Electrical Engineering, and hopes to combine his skills as a musician and engineer in the development of new music technology.
Evan is joined by his father Jeremy Steinkoler on drums, an established veteran of the Bay Area jazz and funk scene (Mo’Fone, Erika Oba Trio, Jean Fineberg's JAZZphoria, Sam Rudin Trio, Jennifer Jolly & Friends, The Bonafides, et al) and the masterful Daniel Fabricant on bass.
