It’s rare to see father-and-son musicians play jazz together. When they do, there’s often an almost palpable sense of telepathy on display, as if somehow in the genetic transmission and upbringing, there were some unspoken secrets of the craft that were passed along. If you were in attendance at any of the past Steinkoler Trio shows, you witnessed a memorable night of music, full of inspired and sympathetic playing, lots of bobbing heads and big smiles.

Evan and Jeremy return to The Back Room for a special duo show, highlighting their unique musical relationship with a night of original jazz and more.

Evan Steinkoler is an up-and-coming young pianist, vocalist, and composer with terrific dynamic range, inventive soloing, and a feel for and command of the instrument well beyond his years. He was the winner of the Dick Conte Piano Scholarship Award in 2023, and was singled out for a scholarship to the Stanford Jazz Institute as the top soloist at the 2024 Campana Jazz Festival. He has performed at jazz festivals across Europe, including the Umbria, North Sea, and Vienna Jazz Festivals, and at Bay Area premier jazz venues, including Yoshi’s, the Freight & Salvage, Mr. Tipple’s, and more. He is currently enrolled at Northwestern University, where he is pursuing a dual degree in Jazz Piano and Electrical Engineering, and hopes to combine his skills as a musician and engineer in the development of new music technology.

Jeremy Steinkoler, “A very swinging drummer who’s mastered the art of coordinated independence,” (East Bay Express) and “A master of second-line syncopation,” (SF Bay Guardian), is an established veteran of the Bay Area jazz and funk scene. He performs regularly with a wide array of musical groups, including his award-winning saxes-and-drums trio Mo’Fone, The Erika Oba Trio, Jean Fineberg's JAZZphoria, The Sam Rudin Trio, Jennifer Jolly & Friends, The Bonafides, and others. He has performed multiple times at the Monterey and SFJAZZ Festivals and has played and recorded with dozens of top Bay Area artists over the past 30 years. He is the author of Finding the Groove, a critically acclaimed collection of essays on drumming, teaching, and performing.

Tickets are $25 general admission. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available here, or if the show is not sold out, you may purchase your tickets at the door before the show.

Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash or Venmo only at the door.
