Steve Barry (SYD) - In The Waves Album Launch
Event description
ABOUT STEVE BARRY
"sparkling…as if he were singing about the crests and valleys of the water, as if he were musically following the rhythm of the waves, upswing, downswing, rollover, rolling movement, spray…" – JazzHalo
“One of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers” (Loudmouth), Barry launches his new quartet album In The Waves – recorded in Sydney in 2022 with acclaimed drummer Eric Harland (USA) and saxophonist Will Vinson (USA/UK).
Born out of a pandemic-inspired reconnection with ocean swimming, the music holds physical and philosophical qualities of water as a common thread, and showcases Barry’s trademark “…harmonic adventurousness, melodic resourcefulness, switchback rhythmic ideas and non-bombastic sense of drama” (Sydney Morning Herald).
Barry is joined by local stalwarts Andrew Shaw on bass and Aaron Jansz on drums, in a first reuniting since the pandemic.
Dr Steve Barry is a multi-award winning pianist, composer, improviser, and lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Born & raised in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and now living and creating on Gadigal land in Sydney, Barry works across the music industry as a performer, accompanist, educator and consultant. He is the recipient of the 2021 APRA Professional Development Award for Jazz, and works regularly across Australia, New Zealand, Japan and more recently Vietnam.
