About the workshop:
In under-camera animation, we bring to life seemingly inanimate things - a fork, a glove, a feather, a gumnut - anything can become a character and start to move. With our device cameras pointed down and our characters and world laid flat on a table, gravity becomes a friend and objects can jump, fly or swoop; creep, sparkle or roll.
In this workshop, you will:
explore techniques for under camera animation, including found objects and cut-outs
learn and apply basic animation principles, including frame rates and anticipation
gain confidence using Stop Motion Studio, an easy-to-use stop motion and video editing app (free trial or $10 for Pro version)
create worlds and characters and let your imagination run wild make a short video (up to 1 minute) to share with friends and family
About the facilitator:
I got hooked on experimental animation the first time I saw my painted characters magically come alive under a camera, and l've worked on animation projects including documentary, experimental animation and music video. My current project is a puppet animation exploring my responses to forebears who were schoolteachers in the colonial regime in Lutruwita /Tasmania in the 1840s.
Elsewhere in my life and practice, l'm a teacher with over 25 years' experience connecting with individual and groups. I have a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from the University of Tasmania and a Graduate Diploma of Animation & Interactive Media from RMIT University. My work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Tokyo and Nipaluna / Hobart, and in film festivals in Naarm / Melbourne, Sydney and Istanbul.
I'm energised by the unexpected connections that arise in environments of trust and curiosity, and excited to share my passion for creative play and experimental animation.
The Kickstart Arts Youth Program is supported by the Tasmanian Government, Creative Hobart and Mystate Bank.
