Description

Starting a career often comes with pressure to prove yourself, say yes to every opportunity, and never appear to struggle. While these qualities can fuel success, they may also contribute to stress, burnout, and disconnection. This session explores how redefining strength can help build a sustainable career grounded in awareness, agency, and psychological wellbeing. Through the Strong Psychology framework, participants will gain practical strategies to thrive at work without losing themselves in the process.

Key Objectives and Outcomes

The transition into the workforce often comes with pressure to prove yourself, achieve quickly, and demonstrate your value. While these qualities can support success, they can also contribute to perfectionism, overcommitment, and burnout if left unexamined. This session introduces a different perspective on sustainable performance by exploring the psychology behind how people work, what drives behaviour, and how lasting wellbeing can be built throughout a career.

Drawing on evidence-based psychological science, attendees will be introduced to the Strong Psychology Framework, which explores how awareness creates agency and how redefining strength can support healthier, more intentional ways of working. Rather than viewing resilience as simply pushing harder, participants will be encouraged to consider how values, boundaries, and psychological flexibility contribute to long-term success.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Identify the psychological factors that contribute to workplace stress, burnout and sustainable performance.

  • Recognise how perfectionism, overcommitment and external validation can influence wellbeing and performance at work

  • Describe how increasing self-awareness and psychological agency can support healthier and more sustainable ways of working.

The session is designed to be practical, engaging, and relevant for students, graduates, and early-career professionals seeking to navigate the workplace with greater confidence, purpose, and psychological wellbeing.

Strength Without Burnout: How to Thrive At Work is presented as part of the Pride in Employment Careers Fair at the Victorian Pride Centre.
