Description

Stephen Brend, Senior Conservation Scientist, and Lucy Kyriacou, Education Lead

Shorebirds, both migratory and resident, are some of the most unique birds in the world. Western Port offers some of the best habitat (listed under the Ramsar Convention) in the Australia for their survival. They spend their lives where land meets the sea and are wholly dependent on the intertidal zone - rockpools, and mudflats - for food.

Join us to learn about the wonderful species that call Point Leo home – including the Sooty Oyster Catcher, Red Capped, Double-banded, and Hooded Plovers, Masked Lapwings, Red-necked Stints and more.

  • This workshop will take you on a guided walk along the beach to observe the incredible biodiversity found along the sandy mudflats.

  • You will learn about the habitats and homes of the shorebirds, including their nesting habits, and the importance of keeping away from roped off areas, and keeping dogs on leads.

  • Enjoy some nature-based art – design your own “scrape” (shorebird nest).

  • Explore the rockpools and discover the intertidal critters on the menu for the shorebirds.

This event series is supported by Coastcare Victoria through the Victorian Government’s Summer by the Sea program. We acknowledge the Victorian Government for providing funding to deliver this activity and thank Coastcare Victoria for their partnership and support.

This event series has been made possible by our ongoing partnership with the Point Leo Foreshore Reserve team. We would like to thank Tony, Managing Ranger, for his continuing support and advocacy for the Biosphere Reserve and the work of the Biosphere team.
