Summer Tune-Up: Gears, Brakes & Drivetrain Maintenance @ Meadowbank
Description
Overview:
Is your bike running a little rough after spring and early summer adventures? Come along to our summer tune-up class to learn how to get everything running smoothly again, and walk away with your bike ready to go.
This is an advanced beginner / intermediate level class that covers basic checks and repairs on gears and brakes as well as drive train maintenance. It’s a hands-on class focussed on identifying things that need to be addressed on your bike and fixing the ones you can. We’ll learn together and from each other as we cover a variety of issues. We’re likely to cover some of the following:
basic bike health check
adjusting brakes and gears
replacing brake pads
replacing cables and chains
cleaning chains and gears
This is about tuning up your bike so please bring it! We’ll keep the space open until 8:30pm if you want to continue working
Good to know:
We do not have a significant parts bin for rummaging
We do keep a small range of consumables (cable inners, cable outers, end caps, assorted nuts and bolts, tubes, brake pads) for purchase
We have PPE (mask, ear defenders, safety glasses, non-latex gloves) for all attendees, if you have your own we recommend you to bring them
If you need any help or guidance, please ask our volunteers, they are eager to help!
Please note there is no possibility of storing your projects for the next time you come in. Our tool library space is shared and used by different groups throughout the week. We need as much space available for the magic of sharing to happen.
If you're worried about trying to fix something, wether we have the tools, or someone with the knowledge to assist, get in touch with thomas@edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk with your concerns and we'll let you know if we can help!

Important Information
- Requirements
Having an active membership at the Edinburgh Tool Library is required. Sign up or renew your membership here, as little as £10 for the year
Bring your own cycle (bike, trike, wheelchair, unicycle ...) to work on.
- Booking Etiquette
We only have a small number of spaces available each week, so to allow all of our members to have equal access to the workshop, please only book two sessions a month in advance.
However, as there is no wait list for our Cycle Kitchen, if you have used your two sessions and spot a last minute slot you can use, feel free to snap it up.
If you would like to attend this session but find that it is already fully booked, new dates are published on Humanitix weekly every Thursday evening at 20:00.
Cancelling and £5 no-show fee
Out of courtesy to volunteers please cancel your booking 48 hours in advance. This will give us the opportunity to offer the workstand to another member and make the most of the time our volunteers are offering.
If you fail to attend the session, we reserve the right to deduct a no-show fee donation of £5 from your registered card on myTurn. If there are any issues with cancelling online, contact us on hello@edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk.
- Location
The session will take place in the ETL Meadowbank Hub, 121 Lawrie Reilly Place, EH7 5GS.
The shop is best accessed via the cycle-pedestrian path south of the railway bridge overpass.
