Event description

Join us for a day of free celebrations as we mark 50 years of Papua New Guinean independence.

Register for SUNA TOK TOK: Symposium, a morning of discussions with researchers and other important thinkers on the history, culture and future of the country.

In the afternoon, explore artist Yuriyal Bridgeman’s large-scale installation SUNA (Middle Ground), enjoy food, singsings, and catch up with family and friends on the UQ Art Museum lawn.

12:30pm: Food by Lambinades

1:00pm: Singsing by Manus Dance Group

1:15pm: Singsing by Simbu Dance Group

2:00pm: Artist Talk with Alison Wel (Haus Yuriyal Member)

Alison Wel (b. 1996, Simbu Province), is an artist and bilum weaver based in Brisbane, Australia and Jiwaka Province, Papua New Guinea. She is a member of Haus Yuriyal, a collective founded by Yuriyal Bridgeman in 2015. As a member of Haus Yuriyal, Alison was also involved in the first showing of SUNA (Middle Ground), 2020 at the Sydney Biennale. Her works have been included in the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.
