Description
Takayna BioBlitz 2026
Dates: 2 pm Thursday 5 November – 2 pm Sunday 8 November
Location: Riverbend Youth Centre, Scotchtown (8 mins south of Smithton, Lutruwita / Tasmania)
We’re heading back into Takayna for the 12th annual BioBlitz.
Join a community of scientists, naturalists, and nature lovers as we survey one of the most extraordinary, threatened landscapes in Lutruwita / Tasmania. Together, we will explore temperate rainforest, buttongrass plains, alpine grasslands, and river systems, recording the species that call this place home. Led by expert survey leaders, you will contribute directly to real conservation science.
Takayna is an Aboriginal living landscape where nature has evolved over millions of years, yet it remains under threat from mining, logging and off-road vehicle damage. Every observation strengthens the case to have Takayna protected as a World Heritage-listed National Park, returned to Aboriginal ownership.
At BioBlitz 2025 we made 3,254 observations of 781 known species! Can you help us beat that record this year?
What is BioBlitz?
BioBlitz is a hands-on, field-based science event where experts, citizen scientists (you), and volunteers work side by side to survey under-documented ecosystems in North-west Takayna. It’s a chance to:
Discover and record species across diverse habitats
Learn from leading experts, scientists and conservationists
Contribute to real-time data collection and analysis
Deepen your connection to this ancient landscape
Learn about our efforts to save this precious place and help contribute to the work to protect it
What to Expect
Field surveys
Daily minibus excursions to a range of ecosystems, including rainforests, coasts, moorlands, alpine areas, and rivers.
Base camp
Riverbend Youth Centre will be our hub, with three vegan meals a day, evening talks, data entry stations, and space to connect and share discoveries.
Accessibility
Some surveys are more accessible, but all require a basic level of mobility.
Meals
Breakfast and dinner at base, with lunch packs for field days. Fully vegan and peanut-free, with gluten-free options. Don't forget your lunch box!
Optional Kids under 12 program
A dedicated Takayna Kids program runs alongside the BioBlitz, offering young people a chance to connect with nature through creative, hands-on exploration. Guided by experienced facilitators, kids will learn about the unique plants, animals and ecosystems of Takayna while building confidence, curiosity and care for Country. Designed to complement the field surveys, the program provides families with a supported way to participate in the BioBlitz together. Learn more here:

Why It Matters
Science is central to Bob Brown Foundation’s campaign for the long-term protection of Takayna. Every species recorded helps demonstrate the global significance of this ancient place.
