Tapestry of Culture - Intro to Improv hand stitching workshop
Event description
Intro to Improv hand stitching workshop
Step into a gentle, joyful space of creativity, connection, and calm with just three simple tools: cloth, thread, and a needle.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be guided by textile artist Phong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) to explore the expressive world of improv hand stitching. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned maker, this session invites you to:
Create: Spark your imagination by playing with colour, texture, and shape. Begin or expand your own mindful textile practice.
Connect: Meet like-minded creatives, share stories, and rediscover the grounding rhythm of working with your hands.
Calm: Slow down and find clarity through the meditative flow of stitching.
Working with remnant and repurposed fabrics, you’ll learn the basics of quilting without the need for rules or rulers. Inspired by the traditional Log Cabin quilt block, we’ll hand piece a unique textile composition, rich with personal expression.
From there, we’ll dive into simple yet beautiful hand embroidery techniques to embellish your patchwork with thoughtful details. Along the way, we’ll touch on ideas around upcycling, visible mending, and textile care, encouraging a sustainable and creative mindset.
About the Artist
Phong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) is a Naarm based Textile Artist/Designer/Maker specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork.
Previously a shoe designer/maker, Phong took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia, reinforcing his artisan ethos. Taking inspiration from these experiences, he developed his textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018.
Using upcycled/deadstock fabrics and natural dyes, he prioritises social and environmental care in his practice. Phong takes a considered and intuitive approach, responding to materials and his surroundings. He applies traditional techniques; hand-quilting, assemblage and patchwork with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity.
By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with:
A hand-stitched improv quilt block (approx. 15 x 15 cm) to take home
Please note that if cost is a barrier to participate, or if you have any other questions please get in touch at ippy.collins@wyndham.vic.gov.au.
