Join us for a hands-on workshop where tradition meets transformation. Guided by Tamara, you’ll explore the ancient craft of Motanka doll-making — a practice rooted in centuries of ritual, resilience, and cultural identity. 

More than just a craft, Motanka dolls are symbolic protectors, spiritual guides, and cultural storytellers. Made without sharp tools and traditionally created from worn fabric, straw, or hay, these dolls carry deep meaning — from spirals that represent the eternal universe, to faceless forms that guard against negative spirits. Come away with your own handmade Motanka doll — a personal symbol of strength, protection, and cultural pride. 

Tamara Ionova is a self-taught folk doll maker whose creative journey began with a deep fascination for traditional dolls as vibrant expressions of cultural identity. Rather than following a formal artistic style, their work is guided by a personal and heartfelt connection to Ukrainian heritage. 

After being forced to relocate due to war, their bond with Ukrainian culture and traditions only deepened. Creating dolls became both a creative outlet and a meaningful way to preserve and share cultural identity while living 20,000 kilometres from their homeland. 

Over the past three years, their handmade dolls have been proudly featured in various Ukrainian community events and multicultural exhibitions, including Pocofesta in Geelong and an exhibition at Space2b.
