Take a look at the modern publishing world, and learn to decide which route is best for publishing your genre fiction.

The publishing world has been flipped upside down, and the old rules no longer apply. But don't worry—you don't have to go it alone. Join hybrid-published author Kylie Chan as you explore the pros and cons of traditional, indie, and self-publishing, so you can figure out the best path for your unique story and goals. This workshop is your chance to get a clear picture of today's publishing options and find the one that feels right for you.

    

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Understand the difference between traditional, indie and self-publishing.

  • Know the pros and cons of each publishing method.

  • Have a grasp of today's modern publishing industry.

  • Gain the tools to decide which path is best for your unique story and goals.

    

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on publishing; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is held as part of GenreCon 2026: Inkling, and is aimed at genre fiction writers of all levels and backgrounds. You do not need to be a GenreCon ticket holder to attend, however it is recommended - you can book here.

    

About Kylie

Kylie Chan has a BBus in information technology, an MBA in IT, and an MPhil in Creative Writing. She started out as an IT consultant and trainer specialising in business intelligence systems in Australia, and then had her own consulting business for ten years in Hong Kong. When she returned to Australia, Kylie wrote the bestselling nine-book Dark Heavens fantasy series, followed by the Dragon Empire science fiction series. Her 2023 speculative novel, ‘Minds of Sand and Light’, explores the theme of artificial intelligence and its possible impact on society. She is a full-time writer based on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
