Event description

Yoga is more than what we do on a yoga mat: It is an artform that can bloom into a whole-life practice. Eight yoga teacher-artists offer a glimpse at their practice through diverse installations surrounding The Image of Yoga, a site-specific photomural by JJ Tiziou.

A photo series documenting Philadelphians who practice yoga, The Image of Yoga was created over several community sessions with JJ, and are now arranged as a vast panoramic installation. Alongside this photomural are 8 smaller installations by artists who all teach yoga at Studio 34. Among these are pointilized musical instruments by sound artist Brett Zweiman, an authethnography on Greek folklore by multimedia artist Anastasia Tsekeris, and a miniature world populated by wee gnomes and the plants they tend by craftmaster Kari Thompson.

Our opening reception kicks off with a free yoga class at 6:00 PM (come between 5:30 and 5:45 to get signed in and set up), after which we will have some food and opportunities to talk to all of the artists.

The Image of Yoga will be up through September and is open for viewing Monday–Friday from 5:00–7:30 PM, with additional hours in conjunction with classes, workshops, and Philly Fringe Festival events. Visit Studio 34's website for exact times and maybe take a class while you're checking out the art show—We'll loan you a yoga mat for free!

About JJ Tiziou

The Image of Yoga was a spinoff of JJ's How Philly Moves community dance photo project, featured in the 85,000 sq ft mural at Philadelphia International Airport. Recognized as one of the nation’s best public art projects by Americans for the Arts, HPM's PHL mural is the largest piece of public art in the city.

While JJ was a major documenter of the Fringe Festival in the 2000s, he's since mostly retired from his photography practice in favor of work as a massage therapist.

JJ now devotes most of his creative & organizing energy to developing Walk Around Philadelphia, a 100+ mile exploration of the city's perimeter with events also part of Philly Fringe!
