The Journey of Whale Song and the Wharemauku Park
Electra Business Breakfast – B2B networking – Sponsored by Electra
Nau mai haere mai Electra Business Breakfast is pleased to be welcoming Marco Zeeman who will present Whale Song and the Wharemauku Park journey. Marco’s focus over the last six years has been as Chairman of the Whale Song Charitable Trust. The Whale Song project is to construct one of the world’s largest bronze sculptural installations right here in Paraparaumu. There will be seven full size humpback whales in a family pod setting over an acre of land, the brainchild of local artist Mike Fuller.
The scale of this project of the future needs to be heard. Whale Song is an integrated part of town centre planning with Puketapu, the Ngāhina Trust, Coastlands and Kāpiti Coast District Council. Marco will weave some of the bigger and exciting picture of town centre building that will clearly impact on the future of people living in Kāpiti and those who choose to visit Kāpiti.
A game changer for Kāpiti and the region? Transformational thinking around our environment? Join us to hear more of this amazingly huge scale sculpture, its impact on Kāpiti and the messages these whales want us to learn.
See you there! Book early to avoid disappointment.

About the Speaker: Marco Zeeman - Chairman, Whale Song Charitable Trust
Marco Zeeman has a diverse portfolio of skills and knowledge that has a perfect fit with Whale Song. From his marine education and conservation interest to his involvement in the sculptural arts world, to construction, facilities management, community engagement, project and event management.
Marco is well-known for his role as instigator and Chair of the SinkF69 Trust, which successfully scuttled the former navy frigate “HMNZS Wellington” off Wellington’s South Coast in 2005, creating an artificial diving reef.
This was a 12-year project where the Government agreed to sell one of its retired warships – Pennant Number F69, the former navy frigate “HMNZS Wellington”. The ship spent a 6-month duration being cleaned and prepared for life as a living reef, moored directly in front of Te Papa. It became a walk on attraction for over 100,000 people, seeing the ships preparation first hand and enjoying a drink at the F69 Bar, established in the hanger for visitors. F69 was successfully scuttled off Wellington’s South Coast in early 2005, creating a wreck diving tourist attraction. As a result of the success and tourism impact of Project Wellington, Marco was made a recipient of “Wellingtonian of the Year – 2005.”
He is Co-founder, Trustee and sponsor of the hugely successful international Tareitanga Sculpture Symposium, where there were five, four-week long events on Frank Kitts Park over a 10-year period between 1997-2006. These five events produced over 400 sculptures, engaged with many 100’s of 1000’s of spectators, bringing together sculptors from around the world. As a result of the success of the Tareitanga Sculpture Symposium, the Sculpture Symposium Trust continues to this day, providing grants to other symposia and things sculptural.
Marco brings extensive end-to-end experience of working with councils, government, funders, and corporate & business partners to the Whale Song Trust. He is adept at engaging and harnessing talent to support major community projects.
