Description
Men aged 85+ have the highest suicide rates in Australia, more than three times the average rate (link). A review by the RACGP (link) identified contributing factors, including physical issues (eg loss of independence), financial difficulties, major life transitions and psychological issues - such as feeling distressed, worthless, lonely, isolated, unneeded, burdensome and marginalised. The review also found these psychological issues are driven by gerontism (the ageism experienced by older people); and compounded by a reluctance on the part of older men to express their feelings or be vulnerable.
The ToolBox project has been developed by Celebrate Ageing to build older men’s skills to cope with and seek help for the challenges associated with ageing, ageism, chronic illness, grief and loss. The project will be piloted in 2026-27 and Celebrate Ageing is currently seeking EOI from organisation's interested in participating in the pilot.
