    Event description

    You are invited to join us at Red Tent Aotearoa for our next circle

    The Power of Laughter

    Sunday, 17 September 3-6pm

    Manuka Cottage, Addington.

    During this inspiring and fun session our special guest speaker Hannah Airey, will be sharing with you the health benefits of laughter and how laughter is our body’s natural antidote to stress.

    Hannah will also give us an introduction to the history of laughter yoga and how she came to be a laughter yoga leader and she’ll be leading us through some simple exercises as well.

    Don’t be concerned that she’s going to ask you to turn yourself into a pretzel, she’s promised she won’t!

    A wee bit about Laughter;

    Laughter is our body’s natural antidote to stress.

      When we laugh it stops the fight and flight response, lowering cortisol  and adrenaline  levels, increasing  endorphins and serotonin.

    Laughing helps remove stress, tension and trauma.

    Laughter “Yoga” is a deceptively simple yet very powerful form of exercise, combining laughter exercises with yogic breathing (quite different from traditional yoga with postures).

    Ultimately, Laughter “Yoga” is about the cultivation of joyfulness.

      It teaches you to make happiness a choice and not a consequence.

    Laughter is a universal language that transcends all barriers; age, gender, language, hierarchy, physical abilities, race, religion, political beliefs.

    Anyone can laugh without relying on humour, jokes or comedy.

    Laughter has profound effects on our mental and physical state of being:

    • the release of endorphins and serotonin;

    • decreases levels of stress hormones;

    • beats depression and anxiety;

    • boosts the immune system;

    •  increases circulation;

    •   floods the body with oxygen;

    •  increases Killer T Cell production, which helps fight cancer;

    •  is an aerobic exercise; and

    •  improves communication and creativity.

    About Hannah Airey;

    Hannah came across laughter yoga 16 years ago and started the first Laughter Club in the South Island (2nd in NZ) in 2007 and has trained hundreds of people to become laughter yoga leaders and has mentored many to start their own laughter clubs in the community.

    In her own words laughter yoga is weird, wonderful and extremely powerful and for her it has been life changing and supported her in coming off medication for anxiety.

    She has taken laughter workshops into businesses, prisons, retirement villages, schools, mental health groups and drug and alcohol addiction services – to name a few.

    FAQ:
    What is the Red Tent and what do you do there?

    The Red Tent movement is worldwide and stemmed from the book The Red Tent written by Anita Diamant.
    Red Tents are spaces created by women, for women to come each month and share their stories, relax, feel nurtured, seen, and heard.
    There is nothing required of you and the main goal is for you to relax, recharge and reset.

    Each month at Red Tent Aotearoa is different, we invite a different woman to share her experience and interest with us so that we all can learn and become more confident. Some of our themes in the past have been; The Power of Pleasure, The Power of Identity, The Power of the Spoken Word, The Power of Positive Touch, and The Power of Humility. Our belief is that 'Power-with' instead of 'Power-over' will change the world.

    Who is the host and why does she do this?
    Jill Natalia is the founder of Red Tent Aotearoa and Red Tent Australia.
    She is a Holistic Counsellor and Business Mentor with Conscious Consulting NZ. Born in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, she left when she was 18 and returned 28 years later in 2020. Jill is a community-focused change-maker with a devotion to non-profit organisations and a passion for non-violent communication.

    She has dedicated the last 10 years of her life to starting, growing, and sharing Red Tent Australia and now Red Tent Aotearoa as an organisation that helps start and support the birthing of Red Tent circles all over the country.
