The Self-Appearing in Supervision Workshop
A one-day professional development workshop for psychotherapy supervisors on working with the phenomenon of self-appearing in the supervision space
Prerequisite: Participants must have completed The Therapist's Self-Appearing workshop before attending this supervision-focused workshop, as this session builds directly on the foundational concepts, language, and framework introduced in the first workshop.
This workshop invites supervisors to explore how the phenomenon of the self-appearing can be meaningfully worked with in supervision—creating the conditions where supervisees can notice, explore, and grow from their experiences of appearing to themselves in their therapeutic work.
Building on the Research Foundation
While the first workshop explores how therapists experience themselves appearing in their work, this workshop translates those findings into supervision practice. Drawing on my PhD research with twelve experienced therapists and a dialogical discussion group with experienced, phenomenologically-oriented supervisors, this workshop offers a practical framework for helping supervisees work with their experiences of noticing themselves appearing in moments of disruption.
Creating Conditions for Growth
The workshop explores four interconnected themes that emerged from the supervision research:
· Holding a phenomenological attitude in supervision - creating an atmosphere of openness, curiosity, and not-knowing that privileges lived experience over theoretical frameworks
· Allowing disruption to be present for the supervisee - resisting the urge to fix or solve, instead creating space for supervisees to stay with their experiences of appearing to themselves in disruption
· Exploring disruption in supervision - facilitating deep phenomenological exploration of supervisees' embodied experiences and their relationship to being-in-disruption
· Modelling in supervision - demonstrating authenticity, vulnerability, and receptive attunement to one's own self-appearing as a supervisor
Beyond Problem-Solving
This workshop positions experiences of disruption—those moments when supervisees notice themselves appearing in their work—as potentially transformative opportunities for developing therapeutic wisdom.
The research revealed that when supervisors create the right conditions, supervisees can move from resistant attunement (wanting to flee from disruption back to conventional ways of being) to receptive attunement (holding themselves with openness and curiosity). This movement opens possibilities for transformation and growth in therapeutic wisdom to occur.
Relevant for All Career Stages
While supervision of early career therapists may immediately come to mind, recent research shows that even experienced therapists continue to encounter moments of vulnerability when their habitual ways of practicing are disrupted. This workshop provides a framework for working with the phenomenon of self-appearing across all career stages—from helping early career therapists normalise experiences of disruption to supporting experienced practitioners' ongoing development.
What You'll Experience
This is an experiential, participatory workshop that begins with you exploring your own experience of noticing yourself appearing in your work as a supervisor. Through guided reflection, group discussion, and practical exploration, you'll discover how to:
· Recognise moments when supervisees may be experiencing themselves appearing in disruption (even when not explicitly named)
· Create a supervisory relationship that allows vulnerability to be safely explored
· Use phenomenological methods to help supervisees stay with and explore their embodied experiences of disruption
· Encourage staying with disruption as a source of learning versus solving or fixing it prematurely
· Work with supervisees' resistant and receptive attunement to their experiences
· Model authenticity and openness about your own experiences of self-appearing as a supervisor
· Help supervisees understand how their experiences of disruption illuminate the conventions within which they're embedded – opening up possibilities to accept or transform them.
The Supervisory Relationship as Foundation
Throughout the day, we'll explore how a safe, genuine supervisory relationship—characterised by warmth, acceptance, empathy, and trust—creates the foundation from which supervisees can risk exploring their experiences of vulnerability and disruption. We'll examine how the supervisor's own willingness to be present with disruption models a way of being that supervisees can internalise and carry into their therapeutic work.
An Invitation to Deepen Your Practice
This workshop offers a phenomenologically-grounded approach to supervision that honours both the supervisee's and supervisor's lived experience. It's an opportunity to move beyond checking, evaluating, and instructing toward creating a space where therapeutic wisdom can emerge from supervisees' own experiences of noticing themselves appearing in their work.
Join us for a day of meaningful exploration into how supervision can become a transformative space—where experiences of disruption are welcomed as rich sources of learning, where vulnerability is normalised, and where the phenomenon of the self-appearing becomes a pathway to growing in therapeutic wisdom.
