Broadway has changed a lot since the Golden Age — and we’re celebrating everything that came next.

Thoroughly Modern Musicals is a Big Gay Piano Bar community showcase celebrating musical theatre in the 21st century, from huge Broadway blockbusters and cult favourites to contemporary Australian works, movie-to-stage adaptations and the new musicals already becoming modern classics.

Expect songs from shows including Wicked, Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, Waitress, Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away, Six, Hadestown, Beetlejuice, Legally Blonde, Kinky Boots, Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, The Last Five Years, Moulin Rouge!, Heathers, Mean Girls, The Prom and plenty more.

From soaring eleven-o’clock numbers and heartbreaking contemporary ballads to pop, rock, folk and comedy, the last 25 years have given musical theatre audiences an extraordinary catalogue of songs — and we’re bringing a whole bunch of them together around the piano for one night.

Whether you’re a dedicated theatre tragic who has been following these shows since their first cast recordings dropped, or you simply love discovering great songs performed live, grab a drink and join us for a celebration of the musicals defining a new generation of theatre.

We’d love to hear from singers who would like to take part in the showcase.

Before submitting, please carefully read all performer information at gaypianobar.com/community.

Then email your submission by 10pm Friday 4 September, including:

• An audition video or audio recording of you singing your proposed song

• The song and musical you’d like to perform

• Sheet music in your preferred key, if you have it

• Any other relevant information about your song, arrangement or performance

• A suitable headshot or performer photo if you haven’t performed in one of our community showcases before

These community nights are all about bringing Sydney’s musical theatre lovers together — on stage and in the audience — for an inclusive, joyful night of great songs, great performers and plenty of piano bar spirit.
