Timber Workshop Safety Training
Description
Timber Workshop Safety Training
The Timber Workshop Safety Training short course is designed for TAS teachers who want to build practical, school-ready confidence in managing safe and purposeful timber workshop learning. Before attending the workshop, participants will complete specified WHS workshop safety modules online through OnGuard. Access details and a list of the required modules will be provided in advance, so you arrive with an understanding of essential safety requirements and are ready to focus on practical skill development.
During the focused 6-hour practical workshop, you will strengthen your understanding of core WHS expectations, the safe use of timber tools and equipment, risk assessment processes, workshop routines and strategies for supervising students in hands-on learning environments. Technical notes and supporting resources will be provided during the workshop to assist with practical activities and future classroom implementation. Participants will refresh their timber workshop knowledge and develop practical approaches that can be applied directly in Technology 7–8, Design and Technologies, Industrial Technology and related TAS subjects.
The course is particularly suited to teachers returning to timber workshop teaching, teachers working out of field, early career teachers and experienced teachers seeking to update their knowledge of contemporary school workshop safety requirements. Delivered at ACU’s Strathfield Campus, the training provides access to specialist facilities and expert guidance, with an emphasis on building teacher capability, reducing risk and supporting engaging, safe and purposeful practical learning. The course positions workshop safety as a foundation for high-quality project-based learning and helps teachers design practical experiences that connect materials, production processes, design thinking, technical skill development and student creativity.
