    Event description

Can you imagine Perth as a carbon sink? 🌲🌱

Almost 200 years of clearing, draining, developing and paving land for urban use has a resulted in the loss of significant amounts of vegetation, tree canopy, soil carbon and biology. Consequently our living environment is becoming hotter and drier and has been transformed into a major carbon source with increasing water and energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This is having detrimental effects on liveability and population health.

Through a series of short documentaries and presentations, join us to find out how cities such as Stockholm are emulating past civilisations and using biochar and other organics in a regenerative, circular approach to help transform their urban soils into carbon sinks. These urban soils have much better water holding capacity, fertility and biology with healthier vegetation and canopy and reduced, better quality stormwater runoff.

What should a low or zero-carbon neighbourhood look like in Perth? The Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC) has been exploring this question with partners the UWA Planning and Transport Research Centre, the Department of Transport and the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage as part of their shared 'Accounting for carbon: planning for low or zero-carbon Perth neighbourhoods.’

Dr Julian Bolleter, director of AUDRC will present some of their findings with a discussion following.

*This presentation coincides with Soil Week Australia

Join us at our monthly movie night to learn and be inspired to take action.
