Course Description:

Do you wish you could capture the beautiful moments from your travels in watercolor – before your travel companions get bored waiting for you?

In this workshop with Rachel Brown, you’ll learn how to pack light and turn travel memories into simple, expressive watercolor paintings. We’ll explore techniques for capturing a scene without getting bogged down in every tiny detail, so you can spend less time painting and more time enjoying your adventures. 

Bring 2-3 reference photos from your travels (or places you dream of visiting)

This class is suitable for beginners and more experienced painters who want to capture the spirit of a place in watercolor.

Already have watercolor materials? You can bring them even if they aren't travel sized. 

Watercolor paint, palette, round brush size 6-8ish, pencil, eraser, waterproof pen, water container, paper towels or cotton cloth, several pieces of small watercolor paper 4x6 - 5x7, optional: fine detail brush

Want travel sized recommendations? 

Rachel’s travel kit fits in a quart ziploc and includes: a 4”-5” square watercolor paper journal, a Pentel Aquash medium water brush, a mechanical pencil, small kneaded eraser, waterproof felt tip fineliner pen (Pigma Micron), a sweat band, 1.25” binder clips(2) and a travel watercolor palette. Until recently she used the Winsdor & Newton Cotman Sketcher’s Pocket Set of 12. Now she fills an Art Toolkit Pocket Palette with her favorite tube paints.

About the artist - Rachel Brown:

Rachel Brown is an experienced educator and artist working primarily in watercolor, creating atmospheric landscapes that explore light, memory, and the quiet relationships between people and the natural world. She loves sharing the spontaneous and playful qualities of watercolor with her students. From landscapes to botanicals and pet portraits, her paintings seek to capture moments that feel both intimate and timeless. Alongside her painting practice, she also creates modern art quilts, extending her exploration of texture, composition, and storytelling through textile work.
