Turning Archives into Art
Event description
This workshop focuses on:
- Sourcing reference and archival materials.
- Exhibition planning, site planning
- how to design and mock up a 3D textile art exhibition
- installation techniques
- Interpreting reference materials into a visual language through drawing, painting, photoshop and fabric printing.
- Exploring techniques and materials for creating the artworks.
Turning Archives into Art workshop will be run on the following dates
- Sun 13 Aug 1:30-4:30; or
- Tues 15 Aug 9:30-12:30 (repeat); or
- Wed 16 Aug 6:30pm-9:30pm (repeat)
The ultimate aim of the workshop series is to celebrate Ipswich’s Woollen Mills, founded 150 years ago, by bringing the mills' rich heritage alive through a collaborative art exhibition in 2024.
A preview exhibition will be occurring at the end of the workshops using samples produced by participants, and to showcase the process of planning the 2024 exhibition.

The project is being co-curated by Janis Hanley, PhD, and Deborah Baronas. Janis’s doctoral research focused on Ipswich’s woollen textile industry. Deborah Baronas is a Rhode Island artist and former textile designer with US and European mills. For more information on Deborah's work, click here.
