• What is UM Cake Swap?

  UM Cake Swap is a community cake sharing event hosted by UM Campus Dining on the University of Montana Oval. Each participant contributes one whole cake, then enters the shared cake tables during a selected sampling wave to fill a box with samples brought by other guests.

• When and where is the event?

  UM Cake Swap takes place Saturday, August 15, 2026, on the University of Montana Oval. Cake check in begins at 10 a.m. Sampling runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are striving for this to be a new annual tradition before the start of the academic semester every year!

• How do I participate?

  Register for a sampling wave and bring one qualifying whole cake to check in. Once your cake is accepted, you will receive a wristband and one pizza style sample box. There is no cash admission price. Your cake is your contribution to the event. You must register to hold prior to the day of the event so we can anticipate how many tables to set-up.

• When does registration close?

  Registration closes at noon, Friday, August 14, 2026. This ensures we have proper time to set-up an accurate number of tables for this event. This event will be considered a private event on the day of the event and no one will be admitted without prior registration or without a cake.

• When should I deliver my cake?

  Cake check in begins at 10 a.m. Please arrive early enough for staff to review your cake, confirm its label, provide your wristband and sample box, and place the cake on the shared tables before sampling begins at 11 a.m.

• How does the sampling wave work?

  Your sampling wave will be assigned during check-in at 10 a.m. When your wave begins, you will have five minutes to move through the cake tables and fill one box with small samples. Sampling is limited to your assigned wave. Event staff will guide traffic and assist with portioning to keep the experience moving and provide a fair selection for each group. We will annnouce additional waves for seconds if there is enough cake left over.

• What kinds of cakes are allowed?

  Cakes must arrive whole and uncut. They must remain safe and stable at outdoor temperatures without refrigeration. Choose a cake that travels well and can hold its structure outdoors during an August event. Your cake must measure at least 8 inches wide and 3 inches tall, or provide an equivalent amount of cake. Cakes must arrive on a sturdy cake board or disposable base. Event staff may decline cakes that do not meet the minimum size or presentation requirements.

  Cheesecakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies, bars, and other desserts will not be accepted. Cakes requiring refrigeration are also not allowed. This includes cakes with cream fillings, custard fillings, whipped cream frosting, or other ingredients that cannot remain safely at outdoor temperatures.

• Do I need to label my cake?

  Yes. Each cake must include its name and all listed ingrediens to ensure safe may identify allergens. Cakes containing peanuts or tree nuts will receive a special purple allergen tag at check in. You may also include a short description, flavor notes, or the story behind your cake.

• Can I attend without bringing a cake?

  Spectators are welcome to attend and enjoy the atmosphere on the Oval. However, only registered participants who contribute an accepted cake may receive a wristband, sample box, or access the cake sampling tables.

• Are children welcome?

  Yes. Children must remain with a parent or guardian at all times. Children younger than 5 may attend with a registered adult without contributing a cake. They must share the adult’s sample box unless a separate qualifying cake is entered for them. Children age 5 and older must contribute a qualifying cake to receive their own sample box and participate in a sampling wave.

• Are there cake awards?

  Yes. Cakes may be considered for three awards:

  Most Beautiful Cake

  Most Creative Adult Cake

  Most Creative Kids Cake, open to bakers ages 5 through 12

  Tell the check in team if a cake was created by a baker between ages 5 and 12 so it can be considered for the kids category.

• What should I bring besides my cake?

  Bring your cake on a sturdy board with its required label. You may also bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair and stay on the Oval before or after your sampling wave.

• What happens if weather affects the event?

  UM Cake Swap is planned as an outdoor event. Any weather related updates, delays, location changes, or cancellation information will be sent to registered participants by email.
