Event description

This practical workshop will help you understand the basics of a Structured Approach to Literacy. We'll look at the key parts of how kids learn to read – from understanding sounds in words (phonological awareness) and how letters make those sounds (phonics), right through to reading smoothly, building vocabulary, and understanding stories.

You'll get a clear picture of why certain teaching methods work and how you can support them. This is about giving you the tools and confidence to help individual children or small groups effectively, especially those needing that extra boost.

What You'll Walk Away With

  • Practical Resource Pack: A collection of simple explanations, handy tips, and easy-to-use activities you can use when working with children.

  • Simple 'What to Look For' Checklists: Quick ways to notice where a child might be struggling with reading or spelling, so you can give targeted support.

  • Understanding Your Role in Differentiation: Ideas for how you can help tailor learning activities to suit different children's needs, as directed by the teacher.

  • Kiwi Resource Ideas: A guide to useful local materials and tools that are great for one-on-one or small group work.

  • Your Own Support Plan: A simple framework to help you think about how you'll apply what you've learned to best support the students you work with.
