YAIA Brisbane: Unpacking the Role of International Law in the Israel-Palestine Conflict

This event offers a platform for young people to explore the role of international law in understanding and responding to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Through a blend of roundtable and workshop formats, participants will engage with experts who provide a range of academic perspectives on this issue. Following breakout group discussions, you will reunite to discuss findings and learnings as a collective. 

Anyone interested in this topic is welcome to attend, you do not need to have an educational background in law or international relations. YAIA volunteers will be participating in each breakout conversation and will provide discussion prompts tailored to the expertise of each expert to foster open and respectful dialogue. The event will undoubtedly enable you to engage with this complex topic.

MEET OUR FACILITATORS!

Rita Jabri Markwell

Ms Markwell is a practising solicitor at Birchgrove Legal and provides legal advice concerning human rights issues such as discrimination and civil liberties. Birchgrove Legal is the firm responsible for the recent referral of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the International Criminal Court as an accessory to genocide in Gaza.

Ms Markwell previously worked as an advisor to various politicians and as a consultant in the public sector. Ms Markwell is actively involved in the advocacy space as well, and currently serves as the chief advisor and lawyer at the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network. Here, Ms Markwell engages with government, media and civil society to explore issues that impact the Muslim community.


Vedran 'Maz' Maslic

Vedran ‘Maz’ Maslic is a multilingual, globally experienced leader with insights from military, entrepreneurial and academic environments spanning more than 18 years. He has led military operations in Afghanistan and Timor Leste, established community empowerment initiatives in Bosnia and Iraq, led strategy development in the private and public sectors, and developed extensive advocacy networks in complex multinational and multiagency environments in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. 

He has lectured on interpersonal and intercultural communications at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and instructed selected Australian Defence Force personnel on developing relationships-of-trust in culturally diverse environments. He also hosts the increasingly popular The Voices Of War podcast, which seeks to explore the unseen costs of war and scratch below its simple narratives that dominate our public discourse.
