Use Community Capital

Use assets and resources in ways that create greater community benefit.

Land, buildings, infrastructure, equipment and other resources can be used in ways that create local opportunities, increase participation and deliver greater community value. They can also sit underutilised or be used in ways that exclude people and limit benefits.

This session explores practical approaches for making better use of community assets and resources. We'll look at how communities and organisations can increase access, encourage shared use, activate underutilised assets, and ensure resources are used in ways that support local priorities.

We'll explore real-world examples such as community hubs, shared facilities, multi-use spaces, local procurement approaches, cooperative use arrangements and other models that maximise community benefit.

What will you learn?

In this session, you will:

  • Understand what it means to use community assets and resources effectively.

  • Explore how land, buildings, infrastructure, equipment, funding and other resources can be used to create greater community benefit.

  • Learn practical approaches to increasing access, participation and shared use.

  • Identify opportunities to better activate underutilised assets and resources.

  • Explore how decisions about asset use influence local outcomes, opportunities and wellbeing.

  • Learn from real-world examples of communities making better use of the resources they already have.

  • Apply the learning to your own organisation, project or community.

About the Community Capital Learning Series

The Community Capital Learning Series is modular and structured around the essential functions of capital. These functions shape how our communities and economies operate. They influence how assets, resources and relationships are created, accessed, owned, governed and exchanged — and how value and benefits flow over time.

Each module explores one core function in depth, combining foundational understanding with practical application. If you are also interested in other areas visit:
