Verges of the Port
Event description
Greening through Community.
Join us as we explore the verges on the streets in front of our houses.
Our home or work verges don’t have to be just grass and a tree. You can change them to be insect and bird attracting spaces, areas that cool our environment or beautiful features within your neighbourhood.
As temperatures rise due to Climate Change the bitumen and concrete of our roads heats up. On a 30-degree day you can expect hard surfaces to reach around 45-55 degrees. Only the coolness provided by plants, trees and bushes will help keep the heat at bay, help reduce CO2 and provide habitat for nature.
You can help by planting your verge and we are here to show you how.
Join one of our verge walking tours to get some verge inspiration and ideas, plus learn tips and tricks along the way.
We are running the verge walking tour twice. Please book into the session that best suits you.
- Saturday 18 June 2pm-4pm
- Sunday 19 June 10am-12pm
This walking tour is approx. 2km. We'll be walking on footpaths and crossing a few roads.
Children are welcome to attend, but must be accompanied by an adult and be appropriately supervised at all times.
After the walk we'll provide tea, coffee and biscuits to share in the park.
