Watercolour Monotype Printmaking

Experience watercolour monotype printmaking with print artist Betty-ann Heim.

Watercolour monotype printmaking is a method of drawing in watercolour paints onto a thin metal plate, then transferring that image onto a piece of damp paper using the heavy pressure of a printing press.

Beautiful washes of colour can be created in this process. Unlike many printing methods Monotypes cannot be printed in an edition. The image, like many forms of printmaking is in reverse.

What will happen in this one-day workshop

You will begin with an idea or a photograph from which to draw your inspiration. You will paint, using watercolours, onto a prepared sheet of metal, and follow the processing techniques needed to make the metal ‘print ready’.

The plate with the watercolour image will be printed onto damp paper. The plate can be reused during the day-long workshop.

At the end of the day you will have at least one watercolour monotype print to take home, and the knowledge of a new printmaking and watercolour technique.

About the workshop facilitator

Betty-ann is an enthusiast printmaker, keen to share her knowledge of printmaking techniques. In her professional career she has been a book-designer, a secondary school art teacher, and a practicing artist. Betty-ann is a member of Laneway Print Studios in St Peters, and a guide at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Other things you need to know

• What we supply: some materials such as metal plates, water containers,

• What you bring along to the workshop: watercolour paints, brushes, a pallet for paint mixing. Pallet may be a plastic plate.

• Suitable for participants at all skill levels, 15 years and older.

• Wear art workshop appropriate clothing.

• Bring your own optional packed lunch and snacks. Tea and coffee provided.
