WEAD SALON SERIES

WEAD Salons are an opportunity to gather, mingle and appreciate the talent of one featured artist or arts collective. Intimate, informal, with tea, cakes and good cheer provided by the team, they are a great way to get connected into the West End arts community.

VERASPHERE: David Faulk & Micheal Johnstone

The character Mrs. Vera was created by Michael Johnstone and his partner David Faulk.

Faulk fabricates the costumes from recycled materials and is Mrs. Vera in the Mrs. Vera’s Daybook photo series.

In Johnstone’s work, the notion of drag is both deconstructed and celebrated. Mrs. Vera’s wild layers of costume embody “fragments of a drag memory tornado,” says Johnstone. She wears accessories created from recycled objects, and is also the keeper of wigs and artifacts from Johnstone’s “lost culture.”

In public, Mrs. Vera and Johnstone act as ambassadors at events and festivals to remind people to value difference and celebrate the eccentric aspects of daily life. They often engage friends to participate in group performances.

As a group they are called Verasphere.

What to expect

Come and hang out with the WEAD team and other attendees, we'll hear from David and Michael about their story, and their fabulous costumes and then we'll to try our hand at making some marvelous costume items from recycled materials. How much does it cost

Tickets to the WEAD Salon Series are "Pay what you will." It is important to us that all are welcome. If you are able to contribute towards the cost of artist fees and refreshments, or even make a larger donation to support WEADs programs, we are very grateful!
