Weaving Back The Banks
Event description
Ocean health relies on river health. And never have the rivers of
the Northern Rivers been so ravaged by erosion, as well as the toxicity
of debris. Will you come and weave the river back together with us?
On
February 28th, along with tens of thousands of others, we experienced
the most catastrophic flood in Australian recorded history. We have
stared directly at the thousands of tonnes of top soil slipping into the
river, the Eucalypts and the Casuarinas falling, creating more
vulnerable riverbanks for future heavy rainfall events, suffocating the
ocean. Choking reefs - the lungs of planet earth.
We are not helpless to these events, nor are we innocent in them.
Right now we are sitting in a critical window where much of the weed is
washed away, the banks are exposed and the opportunity is sitting right
there to put back into the banks the mighty trees and grasses that hold
the river whole.
WEAVING BACK THE BANKS: is a planting
initiative to put lomandras back on the banks, starting with the regen
initiative The Prana Farm with it’s 600metres of Richmond River banks
and working our way upriver onto private land held by custodians who are
willing to caretake their banks and their newly planted babies.
Our work is to keep our mighty rivers clean and our oceans alive. It's not too late but the time for action is on top of us.
