Wednesday Talks // Catherine Buddle
Description
Join us for a casual Wednesday Talk with Catherine Buddle.
Catherine Buddle has a background in the biological sciences, scientific illustration and graphic design. Her art practice is influenced by the meticulous attention to detail these disciplines require.
The microscopic domain of cellular structures fascinates Catherine. Her work seeks to embody the perfection and containment found in biological structures such as cellular organelles and phenomena such as metamorphosis.
Catherine creates wearable sculptures by manipulating numerical sequences found in nature to devise novel patterns. She works with rare, extraordinary fine-gauge antique and vintage metallic embroidery threads, which are the essence of her pieces.
In 2023, Catherine received the Art Lorenzo il Magnifico Silver Medal Award for Textiles and Fibre at the XIV Florence Biennale, won the ICONIC Arte Design Venezia People’s Choice Award, and received the Taylor Cullity Lethlean Kevin Taylor Legacy Grant.
Her work was exhibited in AGSA’s ‘Radical Textiles’ exhibition, and this year she has been a finalist in the Wangaratta Petite Miniature Textiles Award, the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize and the St Columba’s Art Prize.
Alongside her graphic design and art practice, she loves working in JamFactory’s Morphett Street store!
