Description

Weed Dating is a hands-in-the-soil experience for people craving a more human way to connect, bringing strangers together through light gardening, shared activity and the kind of conversation that flows more easily when your hands are busy.

Following a sold-out launch in February, Weed Dating Oz returns this June at its new home, Material Institute in Bridgewater. The new season includes more defined age categories, longer connection time with each person, rest breaks, and a more thoughtfully tailored experience overall.

Held beneath the cosy shelter of the poly tunnels, these winter sessions invite participants to connect while doing seasonal seed saving.

10am to 12pm: 25 to 40yrs, 40 to 55yrs

1pm to 3pm: 35 to 50yrs, 50 to 65yrs

*Email weeddatingoz@gmail.com for a 25% discount code if you'd like to attend both sessions.

The event is facilitated by experienced community hosts Helen Kwiecien and Mitzi Quill.

No gardening experience is required. Just bring curiosity, openness, and clothing suitable for Tassie weather. See FAQs for more information.

Places are strictly limited to maintain an intimate, quality experience. Booking is essential and we expect these sessions to sell out quickly. A waitlist will be offered once capacity is reached.

Come for the grounding, stay for the connection.

FAQs

  • What should I bring/wear to the event?

This is an outdoor event, so please come prepared for comfort and changing Tasmanian conditions. Material Institute has polytunnels that provide shelter from rain but we advise bringing warm clothes.

    Please bring:

    • Water bottle

    • Food/snacks as needed – the event is not catered except for herbal tea and water.

    • Any personal medications, including an EpiPen if required. Participants are responsible for their own wellbeing. Please note there is a bee hive on site.

    • Please wear: Closed-toe shoes or boots suitable for gravel paths and lawn.

    • Sun protection if UV is high.

    • Weather-appropriate clothing, including a rain jacket if needed for breaks.

Come prepared, comfortable, and ready to enjoy being (semi) outdoors.

*Note that pockets or a small bag is useful because there will be no cloakroom or storage area for belongings so they will have to remain on your person.

  • Where do I go?

You will be emailed full logistical info prior to the event.

Please make sure Weed Dating Oz is added to your safe senders so you don’t miss this information.

We will greet you and you'll have time to orientate and we will establish a safe and fun container for the event, and guide you to the designated activity area. There will be clear signage on site showing activity areas.

The front gate will be locked to prevent public access once the event has commenced.

  • How do I match with someone?

At the end of the event, you’ll be invited to complete a simple, private form where you can write the name(s) of anyone you’d like to meet again. The hosts will then carefully review the forms.

Contact details will only be shared if there is mutual interest — meaning both people have expressed a wish to connect. If the interest isn’t mutual, no information is shared and no one is notified.

This ensures a respectful, consent-based process where everyone’s privacy is protected. There’s no pressure to “match.” Some people leave with a new connection, others with new friends, and many with a positive experience of meeting people in a different, more human way.

  • What will happen on the day?

We will gather and spend some time settling in and enjoying the soothing sounds of music from Ben Corrigan and setting a container for a safe and enjoyable time.

For the dating component, men and women will be rotated at slow intervals and have a plant-based activity to occupy their hands. This section will be about an hour with a 10 minute gap between halves.

Afterwards, attendees to write down the names of anyone they liked, enjoy more music and have some good conversations, complete a brief feedback form before they leave. If there was mutual desire for further connection, we provide contact details to each party after the event.
