    $220 for the weekend

    About the Class:

This workshop is designed for beginner or intermediate pastel artists to explore and expand their understanding of the dry medium of pastel by using a variety of wet techniques to transform the medium. The workshop will include demos each morning, then hands-on practice and exercises. The workshop will include CDR methodology — create, destroy, and recreate -- encouraging construction and controlled deconstruction of a work, allowing many layers of color to exist within the surface. Students will experience a mix of structured exercises and free time to work on their own paintings to explore how they can incorporate wet pastel into their own artistic style.

    SUPPLIES:

Students will provide their own soft pastels, inexpensive 1/4, 1/2 and 1 inch brushes that can be destroyed, water containers and rags to wash brushes and wipe wet mediums. Artists need to bring two or more soft pastel substrates to paint on, that are either pastel panels or heavy sanded pastel surfaces such as U-Art sanded paper— capable of being wetted and will not wrinkle when dry. Painters tape is needed to hold paper flat if students opt not to use panels.

(NOTE: artists wanting to try pastels may buy beginner sets with 72 colors for as little as $40 from online art supplies, Michael’s and other craft stores).

    SUPPLIED BY THE INSTRUCTOR:

Small plastic containers for trying various wet medium. Various wet mediums from Alcohol to clear gesso and acrylic gels. Artists will share at least one blow drier but may bring one of their own if they so choose.

    About the Artist: Avon Waters

    Avon Waters

"I paint the air around a thing more than focusing on the thing itself. I am fortunate to live around and in natural areas. Shapes of unspoiled nature have fascinated me since my childhood running around the woods and fields of my rural upbringing. I am at home with the trees, rocks, rivers and streams. My bold use of color represents my emotional response to a subject."
