Description

FUTURES 2036: What will it take for the Coastal Bay of Plenty to thrive?

The Coastal Bay of Plenty is one of New Zealand’s most productive and diverse regions, built around horticulture, farming, forestry, food production, strong communities and an extraordinary natural environment.

But the next decade will not look like the last.

Climate volatility, environmental pressures, changing energy and input costs, geopolitical uncertainty, shifting markets, workforce constraints and rapidly advancing technology will all influence how we farm, grow, work and live.

Hear from two respected keynote speakers

  • Professor Chris Battershill - University of Waikato, Chair in Coastal Science

Professor Chris Battershill - University of Waikato, Chair in Coastal Science

From the land to the sea, and back again What happens on our land does not stop at the farm, orchard or catchment boundary. Chris will explore the connections between our land-use choices and the health of our marine and coastal ecosystems, what the evidence is telling us, and the pathways available for remediation and recovery.

  • Dr Mike Joy - Victoria University of Wellington, Environmental Scientist

Dr Mike Joy - Victoria University of Wellington, Environmental Scientist

The world is changing. How resilient are we? Mike will challenge us to think beyond the immediate pressures of running our businesses and consider the larger forces shaping the next decade, including geopolitical instability, climate and environmental pressures, energy, resources and the vulnerability of highly input-dependent systems. Together, these perspectives will help set the scene for a bigger conversation about resilience, adaptation and the opportunities available to the Coastal Bay of Plenty over the next 10 years.
