    Event description

The Winter Solstice Festival is back for 2024!

Join us for our annual Winter Solstice Festival, a celebration steeped in multicultural tradition as a time for renewal, reflection and reverence for the Earth's natural cycles.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Northey Street City Farm, so we'll be weaving in tales of connection & exploring the threads that connect Plants, People, and Permaculture.

Step into a world of connection and contemplation on the longest night of the year. Immerse yourself in permaculture talks, gardening workshops, thought-provoking panel discussions, arts, markets and activities for the whole family. Our pop-up markets will offer an array of culinary delights and dining experiences, a true reflection of the diverse flavours of our community.
When the sun goes down, join us for a crackling bonfire, solstice ceremony and our annual lantern parade.

    Workshop themes and discussions include:

Hannah Moloney (Good Life Permaculture, Gardening Australia) 'An exploration in community, connections and our collective power to do good in the garden and beyond'

Jerry Coleby-Williams (Seed Savers, Gardening Australia)
Jerry shares his formula for success, linking recipes he can cook, to meals he likes eating to crops that he grows in his 300m2 garden.

    Bruce Gululai Phillips (Murri Tukka)
    - 'Bush Tukka Talks & Tastings' share and taste the original plant foods of the First Nation peoples.

Gavin Hardy (NSCF head of Adult Education)
Discover the Farm’s hidden spots and lesser know places on a guided city farm tour with Gavin Hardy.

Panel discussion with Morag Gamble (Permaculture Education Institute), Guy Ritani (PermaQueer) and Dominique Chen (Walking Story)

The stages will be buzzing with talent all day long, with an incredible line-up of Aussie bands, DJs and artists. One of the most important voices in contemporary Australian music, JK-47, will be headlining the festival showcasing his innate ability to produce timeless lyrics that shine a light on the hard-hitting realities facing his community. With his sophomore album Revision For Regrowth out in the universe, and a Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year Award in tow, JK-47 has boldly introduced himself as one of Australia’s powerful new voices shaking up the Australian hip-hop scene.

Meanjin based indie-rock band Sectionals will perform an energetic set, spoken-word band Rivermouth will fuse jazz/hip hop melodies and improv legends Accomplice Collective will deliver their signature explosive blend of funk, reggae and soul sounds. Sydney based artist Hennessy Rose will weave shimmering soundscapes with her captivating blend of alternative rock, country, and folk influences. Kids and families can sing along to a brand new musical adventure from eco-actionist and award-winning sensation dirtgirl and her Garden Party Band. After dark, the Village Green stage will come alive with an epic First Nations line up including performances from SachémDAMEEEELACaptain Cooked and JK-47.

Whether you’re looking to wind down and relax with the Australian School of Meditation & Yoga, flex your green thumb in the City Farm Nursery, be co-creator of a participatory art installation or discover how you can live a more harmonious life, you’ll find it all at the Winter Solstice Festival. There will be plenty of locally crafted, ethically sourced goodies and delicious street food available from pop-up markets and food trucks.

Bring a picnic blanket, your favourite people, and join us under the stars as we celebrate community, nature, and the days getting longer.
