Working Group | Managing Risk – Reduce or eliminate?
Event description
This working group will focus on 'Managing Risk - Reduce or eliminate?'
How well do you manage Risk in your workplace?
I am sure that most of you will be able to find a Risk matrix somewhere in your business and many of you will be actively using it.
You will have rules in place that are mostly adhered to. But I suspect that these are sometimes overruled. Am I right?
Should this occur, was this rule broken by a risk-based decision? Or was it based on consequence alone?
While a risk-based approach admits that risk is inevitable, a consequence-based approach disregards the likelihood of an event and thus rejects the concept of risk (consequence v's likelihood).
Consequence-based decisions are mainly made to eliminate the risk rather than reducing it to an acceptable level.
Should senior management in control of major accident/ high hazard facilities adopt any safety strategies based on consequence?
How would such strategies differ under a risk based-model using high consequence, low frequency events and demonstrating that the risk is reduced to a level that is as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) by a reasonable list of preventative and/or mitigative controls?
Come along and share your opinions on this important topic.
