Enjoy a featured screening of Rosemary's Way on the big-ish screen at Manly Library in recognition of World Refugee Day.
Rosemary Kariuki was awarded the Australian of the Year – Local Hero 2021 Award for her work advocating for migrant and refugee women in Sydney.
Her film, Rosemary’s Way celebrates the remarkable Rosemary Kariuki and the group of vulnerable migrant women of suburban Sydney whose lives she helps transform from isolation to connection.
Join us at Manly Library, Thursday 20 June 4pm for a special screening of her film.
- 4pm - Arrival and refreshments provided.
- 4.20pm - The film will be introduced by David Addington from Northern Beaches Refugee Sanctuary.
- 4.30pm - Film commences and runs for 75 minutes concluding at 5.45pm.

World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.
Rosemary Kariuki OAM is the multicultural community liaison officer for the Campbelltown Police, specialising in helping migrants who are facing domestic violence, language barriers and financial distress. Rosemary’s own experiences have inspired her to help migrant women connect with a community, combating the isolation that comes with moving to a new country. In 2008, she helped start the African Women’s Dinner Dance, an annual event now attended by over 500 African women from all over New South Wales. A documentary about her work, Rosemary's Way, was released in 2021. In the same year, Rosemary's work was recognised with the Australian of the Year – Local Hero and NSW Local Hero awards. Then in 2022 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia for outstanding service in the multicultural community. Her astonishing 2023 memoir, A Joyful Life, highlights how it’s possible to develop a positive outlook in the face of adversity and will resonate with many readers.
