Get led into the world of novella writing by one of Australia's finest.

Bestselling and beloved Brisbane author Nick Earls will provide an overview of novella publishing past and present, with a focus on key points of contemporary writing craft that work specifically for novellas. He will also examine novella publishing, markets and competitions. Participants will gain novella-writing techniques so that they and their work are ready for the marketplace.

Learning Outcomes

You will expand your knowledge of novellas and novella writing in the following key areas:

  • Clarify your understanding of what makes a novella a novella
  • Explore key aspects of contemporary novella craft and convert these into novella-writing tools you can put to use
  • Learn about how contemporary novella publishing works (including information on dozens of novella competitions and publishing opportunities)
  • Learn key messages to use in promoting your novella when it’s published.

    Format

    This is a hybrid seminar with a focus on writing craft and audience engagement; it will be held in-person at State Library of Queensland and live streamed simultaneously to an online audience via Zoom. 

    About Nick

    Nick Earls is the author of twenty-eight books, including the bestselling novels Zigzag StreetBachelor Kisses and Perfect Skin, and the award-winning novella series Wisdom Tree. His work has been published internationally in English and in translation, and has won awards in the UK, Australia and the US. Five of his novels have been adapted into plays and two into feature films.
