Trauma Informed Yin Yoga for Balancing the Nervous System :: 4-Week Series
Event description
TRAUMA INFORMED YIN YOGA
FOR BALANCING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
With Dr Jess Hardley
At Purusha House, Fremantle
Yin Yoga is a soothing, calming, cooling practice with long holds of three to eight minutes and minimal dynamic movement. This allows access to joints, ligaments, tendons and fascia (instead of targeting muscles like in Yang Yoga practices). It is a gentle form of yoga that uses props to support longer holds in seated and laying postures. In Yin Yoga there is an emphasis on stillness and stability, turning the mind inwards, slowing down brain waves and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Practicing Yin Yoga has been shown to support deep mind-body rest and relaxation, recovery from stress and burnout, depression and anxiety, high and low blood pressure, and improved sleep.
Trauma informed approaches to yoga includes creating and holding safe space for participants, providing options and alternatives for each part of the session, using invitational rather than instructional language, and supporting participants to find safety in their own bodies. There is also a focus on participant agency, not providing hands-on assists or adjustments, and providing opportunities to receive additional support before, during and after each session.
