Event description

So you like honey? Most kids - sorry - most young people do.

  • But where does honey come from? Dad buys it at the supermarket ha ha! But before that?

  • You know honey comes from bees, but do all bees make honey? How do they make it? And why do they make it?

  • And how do the bees stop ants and other pests from getting to their honey?

  • Trickiest of all, if the process of removing honey from a hive by the beekeeper is known as “robbing," are we eating stolen goods?

If you want to learn the answers to these questions and more, why not join the Young Beekeepers program at Collingwood Children's Farm Apiary? You can brag to your friends or even develop a hobby to last you a lifetime!

The Young Beekeepers program

Young Beekeepers is open for keen youngsters from 9 to 16 years old. No experience is needed, and all equipment and protective gear is provided.

The program runs throughout the honey making season, from September to May. Sessions take place on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, excluding school holidays.

Each session's activities reflect the time of year and the development of the bees. After building their frames, the young beekeepers will add them to our hives and monitor the progress during the season. With good management and a bit of luck your frames will be full of honey for extraction some time in March.
