Event description

What is Immigration?

What are some of the reasons why people leave their homes to live somewhere else?

This project asks students to become reporters and find someone who has travelled to Australia to tell their emigration story. The program, suitable for students in stages 3 to 5 has a cross-curricular focus of History, Geography, English and Technology. It will encourage developing skills in research, the use of technology and provide essential presentation experience.

Students will interview a member of the community who has emigrated to Australia, create questions, record and edit the interview as a video or podcast and present it to the group in the final session. The second part of the project requires students to research the country of origin and present a PowerPoint presentation to a panel and their peers.

Session 1 Tuesday 12 August 10am - 12 pm at Liverpool Regional Museum.

An introductory session, outlining the project, key terms and moments in Australian migration, and a look at the museum's current exhibition that features migration stories.

Session 2 Tuesday 19 August 10 am – 12pm at Yellamundie Liverpool City Library

Learn research skills for the country of origin project and an introduction to the facilities available in the Create Space.

Session 3 Tuesday 26 August 10 am – 12pm at Liverpool Regional Museum

A session to review the presentations. Refine and practise presenting your research and there will a member of the library team on hand to answer any technical questions about editing.

Session 4 Tuesday 2 September 10 am – 12pm at Yellamundie Liverpool City Library

Student presentations to a panel of library and museum representatives, interviewees and family are welcome to attend the presentations.

The project will give you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of immigration through the stories of the person you choose to interview.

The program runs with interactions* with museum/ library staff up to 4 standard visits. Students work independently on their project during the time between the onsite visits.  Please note the location for each session
