Join Renée Ferster Levy, a passionate BirdLife Australia educator and lifelong bird enthusiast, for an inspiring exploration of the coastal birdlife around South Maroubra’s sand dunes. Learn to identify birds by sight and sound.
Join the growing community of birdwatchers and twitchers as you discover why protecting our coastal birds matters and how you can make a difference. Watching the birds in their natural habitat brings joy and curiosity, connecting you to nature and the thrill of spotting something very special.
This activity requires some exertion in walking on sand, up and down steps and on slippery and uneven surfaces.
Aboriginal welcome and cultural sharing 7.30am - 7.45am
Before the tour start, respected Aboriginal elder Aunty Maxine Ryan from La Perouse will share her cultural knowledge, experiences and stories of the local coastal area.
Meet at South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club. Wear closed-in shoes, sunhat and long sleeve top. Bring raincoat if needed and water bottle. BYO Binoculars.

Suitable for children 8 years and above
Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult guardian
All participants must pay for the activity
Refunds provided up to 48hrs prior to the event start time.

Photographs, videos and voice recordings
Randwick City Council staff may on occasion take recordings of participants during activities (including photographs, videos and voice recordings) that could be used for the following purposes:
educational or community information purpose
Council displays and promotions of community education events
to complement the promotion of Randwick's Marine and Coastal Program.
If you DO NOT wish for the participant’s recording to be used according to these conditions, please indicate this during the booking process.
Cancellation conditions
This activity may be cancelled due to insufficient bookings or poor weather. Participants will be advised in the event the activity changes or cancellation occurs. All care has been made in the preparation of the January 2026 Marine and Coastal Discovery Program, but some changes may occur due to circumstances beyond the control of Randwick City Council. Refunds will be provided for paid activities up to 48 hours prior to the activity start and in the event of cancellation by Randwick City Council.
