About the Class
This class is a space dedicated to LGBTQ+ people's existence, resistance, processing, play, learning, and creativity. We have always existed, we are here now, we will always exist. LGBTQ+ artists are vital to the arts and larger society. You do not have to consider yourself an "artist" or "good" at art to join this class.
All supplies are provided. If you prefer to work on digital art, please bring a laptop/tablet/phone.
This class is open to LGBTQ+ people and allies.
In this mixed-media class we will:
+Discuss art that deals with topics of identity, past/present/future, culture, and politics
+Explore LGBTQ+ art outlets and support groups
+Show how to submit socially engaged art
+Engage in the creative process of making art related to LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, from concept to final piece
+Value LGBTQ+ people's identities and experiences, and the importance of LGBTQ+ artists
About the Artists
Shady Kimzey is a queer, non-binary artist based in Efland, NC. Their classes are focused on new artists and beginners exploring new skills and ideas through multiple methods of creating. Commonly used mediums are collage, drawing, painting, and writing. The goal of their classes is for participants to express themselves and explore their process of making art. Shady also teaches DIY and digital art. Shady enjoys thinking about pop culture and the future, and working with surrealism, absurdism, abstract art, and art that deals with culture and society. Making art is a healing practice that contributes to their mental health.
TJ Mundy is a Black, trans non-binary queer artist originally from Virginia and moved to NC over five years ago to start a new chapter in life. They are firmly anti-disciplinarian. In their practice, they use vibrant colors, weighted lines, and intuitive movements to express themself. When you see their art, you are seeing their internal processing. TJ also loves making digital art and is passionate about youth arts access, societal issues affecting minorities and using their art to show how it feels to exist. They want their art to extend to others what they didn’t know was possible in their youth.
Shady and TJ are Bad Art Co., and host Bad Art Club monthly at Eno Arts Mill.
