Ruby is a printmaker, painter, and filmmaker whose practice is shaped by Rirratjingu clan designs inherited through her mother, the late Dr B Marika AO, and whose grandfather Mawalan (1) Marika was a principal signatory of the 1963 Yirrkala Bark Petitions. Her early film work is held in the QAGOMA collection.

About Spinifex Hill Studio

Spinifex Hill Studio is the only Aboriginal art collective in the Hedland area and one of the most significant art centres in Western Australia. Art centres like Spinifex Hill Studio play a pivotal role in the lives of Aboriginal and Islander communities: they are places of belonging, safe spaces for self-expression, environments for healing, and sites of generational exchange and learning. Home to more than 100 artists from eight language groups on Kariyarra Country, the studio was founded in 2008 as a community-led initiative. Its artists have been finalists and winners in the Telstra NATSIAA, the Paddington Art Prize, the Cossack Art Awards, and the Hedland Art Awards, with works held in national and international collections.
