Event description
Join other home educated families exploring the Auckland War Memorial Museum and participating in workshops to learn about the fascinating science behind volcanoes and how they shape our world!
There is 3 sessions to choose from depending on your child's age.
Only 30 ākonga spaces available on each session.
Please ensure you know how to qualify to enter the Auckland Museum (workshops are free to Life Learners families from outside of Auckland but there may be an entry into the Museum required).

10am Volcano Adventurers (ECE age) 30-40 minutes
Get ready to ignite young minds with the power of volcanoes! Our hands-on learning programme brings the awe-inspiring world of volcanoes to life, sparking curiosity and creativity in young explorers. Through exciting activities and interactive experiences, children will uncover the science behind volcanoes while immersing themselves in a vibrant Māori story that celebrate these magnificent forces of nature.
Learners will:
· Explore the fascinating connections between people and the world of volcanoes through pū rakau
· Name and identify the different parts of a volcano
· Create a scientific erupting volcano
· Learn what to do in an earthquake
· Explore volcanic rocks
· Celebrate learning through song and dance
11.30am Volcanoes: The Floor is Lava (Years 1 - 4) 50 minutes
12.30pm Volcanoes: The Floor is Lava (Years 5-13) 60 minutes
Explore the earth underneath your feet! Thanks to our partnership with Toka Tū Ake Natural Hazards Commission this programme is free and delivered by our educators in your school or here at the Museum.
Learners will connect with their local volcanoes, explore different types of volcanic eruptions and participate in a rock sorting challenge. Learners are also put to the test to see how they would prepare for a volcanic eruption.
Learners will:
· Describe Auckland's volcanic field and identify volcanoes near their school
· Make comparisons to different types of volcanic eruptions
· Identify different types of volcanic rock
· Gain an understanding of the preparation and response to a volcanic eruption or natural disaster

Orientation Video
Please watch with the youth you are taking before you attend the event.
Be on time!
Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your first session time.
Familiarize yourself here for maps, exhibit closures, eating rules, bag rules & all other important information.
Large bags and backpacks cannot be taken into the galleries - Bag storage is limited and on a first come first served basis. It is highly recommended that if possible bags in your vehicle.

Musuem Staff will be waiting to meet you from 15 minutes before your session on the in Te Ao Mārama (South Atrium entrance facing Newmarket) so that we can begin our first programme on time.
A short welcome and health and safety briefing will be delivered to the entire group upon arrival. Please ensure you attend this welcome as there will not be multiple briefings.
About the Education Session:
Education sessions are led by a Museum Learning Specialist, which will be held in our Learning Labs on Level 1.Parents or a an allocated supervisor for your child/children must be present for all education sessions.
Museum Learning Specialists are not responsible for managing student behavior. Behavior management will be deferred to each parent.
Students will have the opportunity to engage with the handling collection. If you could encourage students before their visit to consider how they handle and respect museum specimens, objects and spaces.
Photography is welcome.

Check in: This is a self check in event. You will need to sign in your groups booking when you arrive at the event.
Group Minimums: There is a minimum amount of tickets that need to purchased on most events (set by the venue). If this event fails to reach the minimum amount of tickets booked before the last day of registration; the event will be cancelled and refunded.
