Build a Bike, Part 2

Overview:

Have you ever wanted to build a bike from the frame up? We have two bikes that we are building up for Bikes for Refugees, and this is a chance to learn and practice hands-on how to put a bike together.

In the second half of the Build a bike class, we’ll see if we can finish the bikes we started in part 1. Participants will work in teams with guidance from the class organisers. We will focus on the following components:

• brake cables and housing

• rim brakes

• front and rear mech

• gear cables and housing 

• chain

• gears

This is an advanced beginner / intermediate level class.

The aim is for all participants to learn and feel comfortable setting up different parts of the bike. We will work at the pace of the participants and cover as many of the listed components as possible during the class time, but please be aware we may not get through all of them.

Good to know:

• We do not have a significant parts bin for rummaging

• We do keep a small range of consumables (cable inners, cable outers, end caps, assorted nuts and bolts, tubes, brake pads) for purchase

• We have PPE (mask, ear defenders, safety glasses, non-latex gloves) for all attendees, if you have your own we recommend you to bring them

• If you need any help or guidance, please ask our volunteers, they are eager to help!

• Please note there is no possibility of storing your projects for the next time you come in. Our tool library space is shared and used by different groups throughout the week. We need as much space available for the magic of sharing to happen.
