Clarence Jazz Festival 2024: Long Table Lunch & Jazz Fest pre-party
Event description
Long Table Lunch & Jazz Fest pre-party
Indulge in a premium lunchtime event among the vines, specially curated by Rhys Hannan at the exclusive and stunning Uplands Vineyard.
Enjoy fine wines and a gourmet multi-course dining experience consisting of hyper-local produce, while listening to an intimate performance from our 2024 Clarence Jazz Festival Ambassador Shannon Barnett.Â
Rhys says - "we've got dressed oysters, whipped ricotta tarts, aged local cheeses to start - for mains there will be smoked and grilled meats, salads and sides, and dessert includes gelato from just down the road, with a hazelnut sablé."
This will all be paired with national award-winning cool climate wines produced by the team at Uplands Winery, including their 2018 Tasmanian Sparkling Blanc de Blancs, which recently won the Gold Medal at the 2024 Tasmanian Wine Show. Also on offer will be a delightful 2021 Pinot Noir, 2020 Chardonnay (Hand-picked on 26 March 2020, the wine appears to have sprung out of the blocks after being whole bunch pressed and aged in barrique for nine months. The nose shows some leesy notes in addition to its melon, stone fruit and fig characters. But the lasting impression is one of generosity and roundness; of a fullness of flavour that is so typical of the warm, dry Coal River Valley. Oak is nicely integrated and contributes hints of smoked ham and ripe fig to the aftertaste. Fresh citrussy acidity completes a package that is smooth, user-friendly and already dressed to thrill.)
There will also be a delicious locally sourced elderflower mock-tail for those who’d prefer to enjoy an alcohol-free afternoon. A glass each of these delicious drinks is included with ticket price, extra drinks + bottle sales will available for purchase from the producers Mike and Debbie, who’ll be on hand throughout the day to tell you all about their hyper-local process and share some of the secrets behind their award winning beverages!
Not only delicious food, but guests will enjoy the company of Shannon Barnett.Â
Born and raised in Victoria, Shannon established herself in the Australian music scene through her work with artists like Vada, Andrea Keller, The Vampires, The Bamboos and the Black Arm Band. After a stint as an in-demand trombonist on the New York jazz scene, she moved to Cologne, Germany to take up a position with the WDR Big Band and quickly became a valued part of the German jazz community. During her tenure with the WDR she had the opportunity to work with musicians and composers including Maceo Parker, Ron Carter, Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Jimmy Heath and Jacob Collier. In 2020 she received the WDR Jazz Prize for Improvisation and in 2022 the German Jazz Prize in the brass instrument category. Shannon is playing with Canadian Australian piano player and composer Lousie Denson - an award-winning pianist, composer and educator based in Hobart, Australia. She grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where she was able to make music a large part of her early life. She completed her undergraduate studies in jazz at St. Francis Xavier University and a Masters of Music at New England Conservatory in Boston, and then made a living playing jazz and latin dance music in Montreal before emigrating to Australia to take up a teaching post at the Queensland Conservatorium, Brisbane. She completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in 2014, and retired from her position of Senior Lecturer in Jazz Studies in 2020. Local Jazz Festival legends the incredible Sasha Gavlek on double bass and Konrad Park on drums join these formidable players for this once in a lifetime quartet - and you will have the chance to talk to any of them at length about their inspirations, the careers, and their travels. Shannon has even designed a special set inspired by Rhys Hannan's menu!
This is a rare chance to experience one of the world’s finest trombonists in an incredibly intimate, picturesque setting.Â
